DeepTech Fund: A New Boost for Czech Tech Start-Ups
The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MPO) has announced the launch of the DeepTech Fund, a new initiative designed to strengthen the Czech Republic’s start-up ecosystem. In its initial phase, the fund could provide up to CZK 1 billion in investments, with operations expected to begin next year. Structured as a fund of funds, it will channel resources into carefully selected venture capital funds. A key condition is that most of the capital must come from private investors, ensuring a stronger multiplier effect of public resources. The responsibility for selecting the funds will lie with the National Development Investment Bank, supervised by the National Development Bank.
Focus Areas: AI, Robotics, and Space Technologies
The DeepTech Fund will target high-potential DeepTech start-ups, including research spin-offs, pre-seed stage companies, and innovative businesses operating in artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and space technologies. According to Deputy Minister Štěpán Hofman, this funding model—already successfully implemented in other developed countries—creates a powerful synergy between public and private capital. On one hand, it enhances professional, market-driven selection of projects; on the other, it secures stable financing opportunities for start-ups with strong innovative and growth potential.
A Strategic Opportunity for the Czech Republic
The fund comes at a decisive moment for the Czech start-up scene. The country currently ranks 20th out of 24 in the Europe Startup Nations Alliance (ESNA) index, highlighting the need for better conditions to foster innovation. To address this, the ministry is also preparing a new start-up law, expected to be presented in the first quarter of next year. Within this framework, the DeepTech Fund represents not only a financial instrument but also a strategic opportunity to boost the Czech start-up ecosystem, attract private investors, and transform breakthrough ideas in AI, robotics, and space into successful, competitive businesses.
