This meeting, which coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Czech Republic’s entry into the European Union, highlighted the solidarity of economic, political, and trade relations between the Czech Republic and Italy, and the many opportunities for future cooperation.

In recent years, economic and trade relations between the two states have intensified considerably, making Italy one of the Czech Republic’s main partners. In 2023, the volume of trade exceeded EUR 17 billion, with more than 3,000 Italian companies operating in the Czech Republic. These companies have become leaders in industry and services, testifying the strength of the economic ties between the two countries. At the same time, the interest of Czech companies in the Italian market has grown, a sign of increasingly deep bilateral cooperation. The main areas of cooperation include aerospace, infrastructure, energy, defence and security, as well as tourism. In support of this, during the meeting, President Fiala announced that part of the F-35 fighter planes acquired by the Czech Republic could be produced in Italy at the Cameri plant with the participation of Czech companies.

The discussion also extended to issues of European and international relevance. Both leaders emphasised the need to make Europe a geopolitical giant by strengthening the continent’s competitiveness, economic security and defence. To achieve these goals, it is necessary to reduce the bureaucratic burden on businesses and implement a coherent industrial policy, backed by concrete financial support. The expansion of the single market to the Western Balkans, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia has been identified as a key strategy to increase European influence.

Another topic addressed was the management of migration, both in terms of work and in its external dimension. Both leaders agreed on the need to cooperate with third countries to prevent migration flows rather than to manage them. Italy, through the Mattei Plan for Africa, is already active in building a new and equal model of development and cooperation, avoiding paternalistic and predatory approaches. Lastly, the meeting touched on the major international challenges, such as the Russian-Ukrainian war and the Middle East question. The Czech Republic and Italy reaffirmed their commitment to defend Ukraine in order to achieve a just and lasting peace.

In conclusion, the meeting between Prime Minister Fiala and President Meloni confirmed the solidity of the relations between the two countries, highlighting the common will to intensify cooperation in several strategic sectors and to tackle global challenges together.

Sources: https://www.governo.it/ https://www.ceskenoviny.cz

AI-generated image

Graphic source: https://storyset.com/

On Monday 14 May in Rome, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries.
