Approximately 139 geothermal power plants have been built on the continent in the last ten years, but none are located on Czech territory. For this reason, around five power plants and ten geothermal heating plants are planned to be installed by 2030. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Geothermal energy is based on utilising the hot water resources in the subsurface, which may be contained in rocks with an adequate volume of pores or fissures. Another method involves the injection of water into the ground, which, heated by the heat of the surrounding rocks, is then extracted to the surface using pumps. In the Czech Republic, the geothermal plants currently in use are mainly used to power heat pumps in single-family homes and industrial buildings. To address the shortage of geothermal power plants, the Czech Ministry of the Environment, led by Minister Petr Hlad\u00edk of the KDU-\u010cSL, is drawing up a strategy to promote the use of this energy, especially for central heat production up to a capacity of 5 megawatts, with an emphasis on using the technology to replace traditional energy sources such as coal. Major future projects include heating swimming pools, the zoo in \u00dast\u00ed nad Labem and a heating plant in D\u011b\u010d\u00edn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Jan Hole\u010dek of the Czech Geological Survey, the future will see an increasing prominence of geothermal energy, in line with the global trend towards greater use of renewable energy sources. It is expected that up to ten heating plants, capable of serving cities of various sizes, could be built by 2030. This marks only the beginning, as it is expected that the use of shallow geothermal energy will also spread to heating different types of buildings, from private homes to large administrative and industrial facilities. In this regard, a joint project between the Czech Geological Survey, the Geophysical Institute of the Academy of Sciences and the Chamber of Renewable Energies has mapped the country&#8217;s geothermal potential, identifying areas such as Northern Moravia, Semila, Liberec, Podkru\u0161noho\u0159\u00ed, A\u0161 and \u010ceskobud\u011bjovick as particularly promising for the development of this technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Czech Republic stands out as lagging behind other countries internationally and in Europe in the adoption of geothermal energy. Analysing current data, it emerges that the United States holds the global leadership position with a production capacity of 3.6 GW, while in Europe, Turkey ranks first with 1.69 GW, followed by Italy and Iceland. These figures highlight the still untapped potential of the Czech Republic in this sector. Consequently, the country is now showing a commitment to progress in the adoption of this sustainable form of energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In conclusion, the Czech Republic&#8217;s adoption of geothermal energy represents an important advancement towards environmental sustainability, with a major impact on reducing carbon emissions. This strategy not only testifies to the country&#8217;s commitment to pursuing ecological goals, but also stimulates sustainable economic development, boosting local growth. In fact, such an approach encourages innovation in related sectors, such as the construction of eco-friendly infrastructures and the management of sustainable energy systems, thus creating employment opportunities and enhancing technical skills among local workers.
