Despite having one of the lowest unemployment rates in the European Union, many companies report difficulties in finding qualified personnel. This is a paradox, considering that thousands of workers over 50 in the Czech Republic remain excluded from the labor market.

In recent years, several cases of age discrimination in the Czech labor market have shown that senior candidates are often rejected during recruitment processes. This happens even though European legislation explicitly prohibits any form of age discrimination.

The data: skills shortage and over-50 unemployment

According to the Randstad Workmonitor 2026 survey, conducted among 27,000 workers in 35 countries (including 500 in the Czech Republic), the age considered “too high” by employers has been progressively decreasing. However, the data paint a very different picture from common stereotypes.

Seventy-four percent of Czech workers say they are more productive when collaborating with senior colleagues, while nearly 70% report having gained key skills through interaction with older generations. Generational diversity in Czech companies therefore proves to be a key driver of productivity and knowledge transfer.

At the same time, ManpowerGroup reports that 66% of employers in the Czech Republic struggle to fill open positions, and 74% indicate a significant shortage of qualified staff. Despite this, around 110,000 workers over 50 remain long-term unemployed, with an estimated annual cost of CZK 61 billion for public finances.

This imbalance highlights a structural distortion in the Czech labor market, where labor supply and demand fail to match effectively.

Demographics and population aging in the Czech Republic

The issue is further aggravated by demographic trends. Each year, around 120,000 people leave the workforce, while only 90,000 new workers enter it. Population aging in the Czech Republic therefore represents a structural challenge for the country’s economic sustainability.

Excluding mature workers in a context of demographic decline means further reducing national productive potential.

Remote work and generational stereotypes

Many companies acknowledge that age diversity increases productivity and organizational stability. However, the spread of remote work in the Czech Republic has introduced new coordination and knowledge-transfer challenges. In some cases, this has reinforced the perception that senior workers are less flexible or less adaptable to new technologies.

Yet these stereotypes are not supported by the data. On the contrary, the experience of workers over 50 represents a strategic resource for mentoring, internal training, and the consolidation of corporate skills.

A strategic issue for businesses and investors

The employment crisis in the Czech Republic is not only a social issue but also a matter of economic competitiveness. In a context of growing competition for talent and digital transformation, effectively integrating senior workers can reduce pressure on the labor market, contain public costs, and strengthen the resilience of the productive system.

For companies, valuing workers over 50 means improving stability, expertise, and operational continuity. For investors, it represents an indicator of the maturity and sustainability of the Czech labor market.

If the Czech Republic manages to overcome cultural barriers and generational stereotypes, it could transform the current labor shortage into an opportunity for sustainable growth. Otherwise, the risk is a growing imbalance between demographic dynamics and productive capacity, with long-term economic consequences.

Image AI

References: https://www.e15.cz/ekonomika/hledame-kolegu-do-mladeho-tymu-firmam-chybi-lide-ale-padesatniky-dal-prehlizeji-1430797

The labor shortage in the Czech Republic is now one of the main challenges for businesses and investors.
