Consumer prices in the Czech Republic increased by 1.4 percent year-on-year in February<\/strong>, marking the lowest inflation rate since October 2016<\/strong>. The data comes from a preliminary estimate published by the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO)<\/a>. Meanwhile<\/strong>, on a monthly basis, consumer prices fell by 0.1 percent<\/strong>, showing a slight decrease compared with January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key reason behind this slowdown in inflation was the decline in energy prices<\/strong>. As a result<\/strong>, overall consumer costs dropped more than analysts had expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inflation Below the Central Bank\u2019s Target<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The February figure was lower than both the target and the latest forecast of the Czech National Bank (CNB)<\/strong>. In fact<\/strong>, financial markets had predicted that inflation would remain at the same level as in January rather than decrease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Petr Dufek, chief economist at Creditas Bank<\/strong>, the trend in inflation is becoming more favorable. In particular<\/strong>, this improvement is linked to falling prices of some food products<\/strong>. The decline reflects the reduction in agricultural production prices<\/strong>, which has gradually been passed on to consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Government Measures Help Reduce Inflation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another factor contributing to lower inflation is a policy change regarding renewable energy fees<\/strong>. Since the beginning of the year<\/strong>, these fees have been transferred from consumers to the state. Consequently<\/strong>, year-on-year inflation has decreased by about 0.4 percentage points<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However<\/strong>, even after considering this administrative measure, inflation is still below the CNB\u2019s target level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rising Service Prices Remain a Concern<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite the overall slowdown in inflation, service prices continue to rise relatively quickly<\/strong>. Although<\/strong> the growth in this sector slowed compared with January, prices are still increasing by about 4.5 percent year-on-year<\/strong>. Therefore<\/strong>, the central bank cannot completely ignore this development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main cause of this trend is ongoing tension in the real estate market<\/strong>. Specifically<\/strong>, housing costs influence inflation through rents and imputed rents<\/strong>, which estimate the hypothetical cost homeowners would pay if they rented their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previous Inflation Trends and Future Outlook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Inflation had already slowed in January<\/strong>, when the annual rate reached 1.6 percent<\/strong>, the lowest level in more than nine years. Similarly<\/strong>, experts attributed this decrease mainly to the transfer of renewable energy payments from consumers to the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final February inflation data<\/strong> will be published by the Czech Statistical Office on March 10<\/strong>. So far<\/strong>, preliminary estimates in recent months have been confirmed by the final results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead<\/strong>, economists suggest that interest rate cuts could return to discussion<\/strong>. Although<\/strong> financial markets currently expect no rate reduction in the second quarter, this possibility could reappear if geopolitical tensions in the Persian Gulf are resolved within the next two months<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
