Czech businesses perform slightly better than the European average, but payment delays remain common.

According to the European Payment Practices 2025 survey, 76% of B2B receivables in Czechia are paid on time. The European average is 75%. However, 20% of payments arrive late, while another 4% are eventually written off as uncollectible.

In other words, around one in four business payments is either delayed or never recovered.

Payment terms can make the problem even more serious. Czech business customers have an average of 36 days to pay an invoice. When a payment becomes overdue, suppliers wait another 21 days on average.

Meanwhile, companies still need to pay salaries, suppliers, rent, energy and other operating costs. As a result, even a profitable business can face cash-flow pressure when customers pay late.

Why Payment Delays Spread Through the Supply Chain

Late payments are not always caused by customers refusing to pay. Often, the problem starts somewhere else in the supply chain.

In Czechia, seven out of ten companies say their customers pay late because they are still waiting for payments from their own clients. In addition, 61% point to the use of supplier credit as another reason for payment delays.

This creates a chain reaction.

If one company receives money late, it may delay payments to its own suppliers. Those suppliers may then face the same problem. Therefore, one overdue invoice can affect several businesses.

In practice, suppliers may end up financing their customers for longer than expected. To cover the gap, they may need to use cash reserves or external financing.

Late Payments Can Reduce Profits and Investment

The impact goes far beyond extra administration.

The survey found that 57% of Czech companies experienced a loss of profit because of late or unpaid receivables. Half also reported higher interest costs because they had to finance missing cash in other ways.

Moreover, 27% increased their prices to compensate for losses linked to payment problems.

Late payments in Czechia can therefore affect liquidity, profitability and investment. The risk is especially important for smaller businesses with limited cash reserves or companies that depend on a few major customers.

The outlook is also uncertain. Only 11% of Czech businesses expect payment behaviour to improve. By contrast, 17% expect it to become worse.

How Businesses Can Manage Overdue Invoices

For this reason, receivables management should be part of normal financial planning.

Companies should keep clear records for every receivable. These should include contracts, orders, invoices and relevant customer communication.

It is also important to act quickly when an invoice becomes overdue. A company can start by checking whether there is an administrative problem. It can then send a clear reminder and, if necessary, a formal payment request.

If the customer agrees to instalments or formally recognises the debt, the agreement should be put in writing.

Late payments in Czechia are not just an administrative inconvenience. They can reduce profits, increase financing costs and limit future investment. For this reason, active receivables management is an important way to protect a company’s cash flow and financial stability.

link:https://www.businessinfo.cz/clanky/evropskym-spolecnostem-hradi-pozde-nebo-vubec-ctvrtina-firem-se-spatnou-platebni-moralkou-se-potykaji-i-ceske-firmy/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

AI Image

Late Payments Remain a Common Business Problem Late payments in Czechia continue to create financial pressure for companies.
