The CNB has announced a further increase in the interest rate. Today, the board of directors met to decide, after a long period of stagnation due to the economic crisis, to increase interest rates on commercial loans.

In particular, the repo rate rose by 25 basis points to 0.50%, while the Lombard rate, again by 25 basis points, reached 1.25%. Finally, the discount rate remained unchanged at 0.05%. These levels have been declared but will enter into force only from 24 June 2021.

Before the coronavirus pandemic and the relative economic crisis, so around February 2020, the interest rate was at 2.25%. Interest rates dropped dramatically with the advent of the pandemic and remained unchanged since last May, at 0.25%. Economists have considered it appropriate to make them rise again because of a possible increase in inflation due to the economic recovery.
