Overview of the webinar organised by the Czech-Italian Chamber of Commerce

What were the topics covered in the webinar?

On Thursday, April 27, 2023, the Italian-Czech Chamber of Commerce (Camic) organized a webinar on the labor market, specifically “Current Trends in the Labor Market in the Czech Republic” with guest speaker Jitka Součková (CMO Grafton Recruitment and GiGroup CZ & SK) who has been working in human resources marketing for ten years. Several topics were discussed during the webinar, including an analysis of Czech employees’ preferences, employee motivation and demotivation, the search for a new job, an overview of financial and non-financial benefits, the quality of life of employees in the Czech Republic, and last but not least, expected labor market trends for 2023.

Insights on survey results

One of the first topics addressed during the presentation was the duration of the recruitment process for different job positions. For instance, up to 11 weeks for a managerial position, about 8 weeks for a technical or economic worker or for a qualified position in production, and 3 weeks for an unskilled position. The results of surveys on workers and their relationship with the work environment were then presented and discussed. Specifically, 56% of people reported having a work-life balance, with a good balance between work and private life, 36% would like it, and only a very low percentage of people (8%) said they did not need it. Regarding employees’ needs in the workplace, a good relationship with colleagues and the presence of an inspiring employer were the top priorities. In fact, 40% of workers would like it but do not have it. In parallel, 30% of blue-collar workers do not have a job they like, 25% for white-collar workers, and 12% for IT specialists. Another aspect is dissatisfaction related to compensation, following the increase in expenses in the Czech Republic. Therefore, 64% of white-collar workers are dissatisfied with their salaries, and 70% of blue-collar workers share the same dissatisfaction. Another key topic is the Home Office, which is considered “obvious” by 62% of employees and seen as a benefit by 50%. The most widespread and most loved model is the hybrid one, which allows working both on-site and from home, thus allowing time savings. In fact, 70% of those who work at least occasionally from home claim to save time, and 58% also save on food and transportation. Regarding savings, a curiosity is that a greater percentage of people prefer to give up food and restaurant visits rather than limit their car travel. A positive aspect highlighted during the webinar concerns the minimal impact of the crisis on the labor market. In fact, data shows that only 3% of respondents lost their jobs, 8% experienced a salary reduction, and the same percentage of people lost financial benefits. A second survey, this time regarding benefits, was presented during the webinar, and it emerged that inflation has increased interest in financial benefits, and conversely, there is no longer interest in company nurseries. The generational issue was also addressed, and it emerged that Generation Z does not want overtime and gives great importance to flexible working hours, Generation X appreciates longer vacations and salaries regulated by inflation, and Baby Boomers appreciate mainly healthcare.

Q&A

After presenting various topics and discussing the results of the surveys, questions were asked to Jitka Součková. In particular, she was asked more specifically about the impact of the crisis on the job market and it was reiterated how the crisis did not have an extremely negative influence on employment, in fact, the data shows that only 3% of workers have been affected by job loss, confirming the good health of the job market in the Czech Republic. Subsequently, Jitka Součková was asked what aspect had struck her the most and the answer concerned the perceived quality of life of the Czech population compared to the population of Slovakia. 75% of people in the Czech Republic consider themselves satisfied with their lives in the country while 68% of people living in Slovakia do not consider themselves equally satisfied, but rather, they live poorly. This surprises Jitka Součková, who continues explaining how inflation in Slovakia is much lower than in the Czech Republic, but despite this, dissatisfaction is higher.

Source: https://www.camic.cz/

Source of images: https://pixabay.com/

Graphic Source: https://storyset.com/

What are the current trends on the labour market in the Czech Republic?
