Czech Republic: New Biomethane Incentives from 2026

From 2026, the Czech Republic will introduce a new incentive scheme to support biomethane production.
The goal is clear: to reduce the use of natural gas and strengthen national energy security.

How the new scheme works

Public support will be allocated through competitive auctions.
In practice, incentives will be awarded to projects that require the lowest level of state subsidies. As a result, authorities aim to:

  • encourage the development of new plants;
  • support the conversion of existing facilities;
  • ensure more efficient use of public funds.

Consequently, biomethane could cover around 10% of national gas demand.

Opportunities, but also challenges

At the same time, the sector highlights several challenges.
According to CZ Biom, reaching this target will not be easy. In particular, key issues include:

  • high upfront investment costs;
  • limited availability of biomass;
  • lengthy permitting procedures;
  • the need to upgrade gas grid infrastructure.

For this reason, sector growth may be slower than expected.

Implications for investors and operators

Despite these challenges, the new incentive scheme creates attractive opportunities for investors, utilities, and infrastructure funds.
However, the auction-based system will increase competition among projects. Therefore, it will be essential to:

  • carefully assess financial and business plans;
  • evaluate regulatory risks;
  • closely monitor cost structures.

Conclusion

In summary, stronger support for biomethane in the Czech Republic represents an important step in the energy transition. If implemented effectively, the new system could attract private capital and support market development. However, for investors and operators, a cautious approach based on solid financial and regulatory analysis will remain crucial.
