The European Commission launches the LIFE 2026 Calls
The European Commission has launched the LIFE 2026 Calls for Proposals. A total budget of €601.5 million will support projects focused on sustainability, climate action and energy resilience across Europe.
Managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), the LIFE Programme aims to turn innovative ideas into practical solutions. At the same time, it supports the European Union’s environmental and climate objectives.
These new calls arrive during a period of energy uncertainty and geopolitical instability. As a result, the European Union wants to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. Another key objective is strengthening energy systems and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Funding opportunities for climate and environment projects
Several strategic sectors are included in the LIFE 2026 Calls. Among them are biodiversity protection, circular economy projects, pollution reduction and climate adaptation initiatives. Renewable energy and energy efficiency projects are also part of the programme.
The funding is divided across different areas. For instance, €166 million has been allocated to Nature and Biodiversity projects. In parallel, €79 million will support Circular Economy and Zero Pollution initiatives. Another €85.5 million is dedicated to the Clean Energy Transition.
Additional resources will support strategic integrated projects related to climate and environmental protection. The European Commission is particularly interested in innovative solutions with strong potential for large-scale implementation.
Who can apply for LIFE 2026 funding
Any legal entity based in the European Union or in countries associated with the LIFE Programme can apply. Applications may be submitted by one organisation or by several partners working together.
Eligible projects should help protect nature and reduce harmful emissions. They should also improve energy efficiency and strengthen climate resilience. Furthermore, the programme encourages citizen participation in the energy transition.
Deadlines and application support
The LIFE 2026 Calls officially opened on 21 April 2026. For Standard Action Projects, the deadline is 22 September 2026. However, submission dates for other project categories may vary.
Between 28 and 30 April 2026, applicants can participate in dedicated information days. During these online sessions, the LIFE team will explain the application process and provide guidance for preparing successful proposals.
