Art Auctions in the Czech Republic Show Signs of Recovery
Art auctions in the Czech Republic are gaining momentum in 2026. After a weaker 2025, the market is showing renewed activity, with stronger sales and growing interest in mid-priced artworks.
According to Artplus, traditional auctions generated CZK 766 million in the first half of 2026, over CZK 200 million more than a year earlier. In addition, 127 artworks sold for more than CZK 1 million, setting a first-half record.
Stronger Demand Beyond Expensive Artworks
The recovery is not limited to expensive paintings. In September, LiveBid recorded CZK 36.3 million in sales across 23 auctions.
Although fewer works were sold than in September 2025, turnover increased. Moreover, the median selling price doubled, while 70% of turnover came from artworks priced between CZK 25,000 and CZK 1 million.
These figures suggest stronger demand across the middle segment of the market.
Notable Art Sales in Prague
Recent art auctions in the Czech Republic provide further evidence of the market recovery. At an October auction in Prague, organised by 1. Art Consulting, sales approached CZK 88 million.
An Emil Filla painting sold for nearly CZK 3.5 million. Meanwhile, works by Josef Lada and Michael Rittstein each reached CZK 2.3 million. Josef Bolf also achieved a new personal auction record of almost CZK 1.9 million.
Understanding Art Auction Fees and Buyer’s Premium
Buying art at auction involves more than the winning bid. Auction houses usually charge an additional fee called the buyer’s premium.
For example, European Arts’ October 2026 auction applied a 24% buyer’s premium, including VAT. A painting purchased for CZK 100,000 would therefore cost CZK 124,000.
However, commission rates vary between auction houses. Buyers should also check for transport, storage or other additional costs before placing a bid.
